## What the health check covers

Before you form a joint bid, name a subcontractor or price against a competitor, it pays to know whether the company is on solid ground. Under the Procurement Act 2023, buyers can set conditions of participation on financial standing, and a weak partner can sink a strong bid.

Enter a company name or Companies House number to see, in one place, its register status and accounts deadline, its latest filed accounts, any insolvency notices in The Gazette, the public sector contracts it has won, how fast it pays its own suppliers and, for strategic suppliers, the Cabinet Office’s ratings of its government contracts.

Warning signs use the same rules as TenderNation’s Signals feature. This is published data only: it is not a credit check or financial advice, so always confirm on Companies House.

## Questions people ask

How do I check if a company is financially stable?Look at its latest filed accounts at Companies House (net assets, cash and, for larger companies, turnover), check its accounts are not overdue, and search The Gazette for insolvency notices such as winding-up petitions or administration. A track record of delivering public contracts and paying its own suppliers on time are useful extra signs. None of this replaces a credit check.

What do net assets mean, and why do negative net assets matter?Net assets are what a company owns minus what it owes, as at its accounts date. Negative net assets mean its liabilities are bigger than its assets. That is not proof of trouble (start-ups and some subsidiaries run this way), but buyers often ask for a parent company guarantee or more evidence when they see it.

Where does this data come from?Company details and filed accounts come from Companies House bulk data, insolvency notices from The Gazette, contract wins from award notices on Contracts Finder and Find a Tender (plus some council contract registers), payment times from the government’s payment practice reports, and contract KPIs from the Cabinet Office. Small companies often file abridged accounts without turnover, so some figures are missing.

How should I check a subcontractor or partner before bidding?Confirm the company is active and its accounts are up to date, read its latest net assets and cash, check for Gazette insolvency notices, and look at the public contracts it has delivered and for whom. Under the Procurement Act 2023 buyers can set conditions of participation on financial standing, and they may look at your key subcontractors too, so check them before you name them in a bid.
