## Where this spending data comes from

Public bodies publish what they pay suppliers. Councils publish payments over £500; central government departments and NHS England, trusts and integrated care boards publish payments over £25,000. We also read police, fire, university and housing association files where they publish them.

We total each body’s latest 12 months of payments per supplier, with the number of payments, the first and last payment dates and the most common purpose. Payments to individuals are redacted by the publishers, and we leave tax, payroll, pensions and transfers to other public bodies out of the lists.

## Questions people ask

What is council spending data?Councils publish their payments to suppliers over £500, and central government departments and NHS bodies publish payments over £25,000. Each line shows who was paid, how much, when and usually what for. We total the latest 12 months of payments per supplier for each body.

Why are some payments missing?Payments to individuals are redacted to protect personal data, and payments below each body’s threshold are not published. We also leave out lines that are not purchases, such as tax, payroll, pensions, levies, treasury deposits and transfers to other public bodies.

How can I use this to find buyers for what I sell?Search for a competitor in supplier mode to see which bodies already pay for what you sell, and how much. Then look the buyer up to see its other suppliers, its open tenders and when its contracts end. Spending also shows purchases that may never have been advertised as a tender.

How often is the spending data updated?Councils and departments publish monthly. We check council files weekly, NHS and other public bodies on a daily rolling cycle, and central government weekly. Departments often publish one to three months in arrears.
