Buyers usually start planning 6 to 18 months before the end date, so by the time a tender notice is published the specification is often settled. Knowing what ends when gives you that time back. Under the Procurement Act 2023, buyers can talk to suppliers before a tender through preliminary market engagement. Use the months before the end date to understand the buyer’s plans, how the incumbent is performing and whether you can bid. End dates come from contract award notices on Contracts Finder and Find a Tender (and TED for older UK notices), plus council contract registers. Values are shown only when the published figure is money won, not a framework ceiling or a likely keying error. ## Questions people ask How far ahead do public buyers re-tender a contract?Most buyers start 6 to 12 months before a contract ends, and 12 to 18 months for large or complex services, because they need time for market engagement, the tender itself, evaluation, the standstill period and handover. That is why contracts ending in the next year are worth tracking now. What do extension options mean for the end date?Many contracts are let for a fixed term plus optional extensions, for example “3 years plus 1 plus 1”. The end date here is the one the award notice gives, which is usually the end of the initial term. If the buyer takes up an extension, the work may not be re-tendered until later, so check the original notice for extension terms. Where do these contract end dates come from?From contract award notices published on Contracts Finder and Find a Tender (and TED for older UK notices), plus council contract registers published under the Local Government Transparency Code. We list contracts the buyer or supplier has not marked as terminated early. How accurate are the end dates?They are what the buyer published at award, so they can be out of date if a contract was extended, varied or ended early without a new notice. Treat them as a strong signal to start a conversation with the buyer, not a confirmed re-tender date. Can I talk to the buyer before the re-tender is published?Yes. Under the Procurement Act 2023, buyers can run preliminary market engagement before a tender and must publish a notice when they do.
