Jeder Vierte über 60 Jahren wird von der Krankheit betroffen sein. Alleine in Deutschland leiden ca. 7 Millionen Menschen an dieser Krankheit (~200 Millionen Menschen weltweit). Bei der AMD degenerieren die Zapfen-Photorezeptorzellen (Zapfen-PRs), die für das zentrale Sehen, das Lesen, das Farbsehen und das Erkennen von Gesichtern wichtig sind. Ihr Verlust führt zu schweren Einschränkungen und mindert die Lebensqualität erheblich. Es existieren zwei Formen der AMD, für beide gibt es bislang keine Heilung.
