Eerder plagbeheer heeft weliswaar geleid tot een reductie van stikstof, maar ook tot versterkte fosforlimitatie en een verminderde beschikbaarheid van basische kationen, met negatieve gevolgen voor flora en fauna. Hierdoor zijn veel geplagde heidevegetaties soortenarm gebleven. P-additie, al dan niet gecombineerd met herstel van basische kationen, wordt gezien als een mogelijke opvolgmaatregel. De toepasbaarheid, effectiviteit en duurzaamheid hiervan zijn echter nog onvoldoende uitgewerkt. Het onderzoek moet inzicht bieden in: • De huidige status van stikstof, fosfor en buffering in geplagde en gechopperde droge heide; • De langetermijneffecten van P-additie en eventuele bufferherstelmaatregelen op bodem, vegetatie en fauna; • De omstandigheden waaronder P-additie effectief, veilig en duurzaam kan worden toegepast.
