The retaining wall on the Western side of Pen Beck supports the public highway and the wall and riverbanks on the Eastern side of the beck are privately owned. The highway is the only access route to several properties and farms; there is no alternative route for vehicles. The retaining wall suffered flood damage earlier this year resulting in a significant loss of masonry in the area surrounding a private footbridge opposite the property known as 'Royal Oak House'.
