Six existing sheltered housing schemes were identified; two in Marple, two in Reddish and two in Edgeley, which were close enough geographically to have one team of staff covering both buildings. In 2014 the borough gained its first purpose built affordable extra care housing scheme with the completion of Smithy Croft in Heald Green, which was the first to offer mixed tenure.
