It is a legal requirement for Local Authorities to provide Approved Mental Health Professionals (AMHPs) to undertake Assessments under the Mental Health Act (1983). The training of new AMHP's is a priority area for the service. Northumbria university is the only Higher Education Institute in the North East approved to run the AMHP programme. AMHPs throughout the region are trained on the programme and all Local Authorities are part of a consortium, which input into and evaluate the programme. The ensure quality training which meets Durham County Council's needs. The cost for each trainee is £2,650 for 2022/23.
