Serious illness and deaths from COVID in prisons are amongst the highest of any cohort of the population. Furthermore, the impact of COVID outbreaks on prison operations and mental wellbeing has been profound. A wastewater surveillance system is required to reduce the risk of infection to prisoners, prison staff, their families and communities.
