The main tool employed for fish loss assessment has been Equivalent Adult values (EAVs) which translate loss of eggs/juveniles into adults using usually generic information from lifetables on survival rates, natural and fishing mortalities. These lifetables have themselves varying degrees of certainty and evidence to support them. Moreover, the use of EAVs does not consider the role each life stage might have in the local ecosystem and the impact of its removal.
