Since its peak in 2008, the price of steel has reduced by nearly half, with contributing factors including overcapacity at a global level, falling demand in Europe and expanded supply from China. The steel industry in the UK is already under significant pressure from these forces – as demonstrated by the recent closure of SSI UK’s Redcar steelworks. The UK Steel Summit on the 16 October identified 5 industry asks of Government by industry • Full implementation of the Energy Intensive Industry Compensation Package • continued backing for EU-level action on anti-dumping measures • Business Rates • Avoid gold plating regulations (e.g. Industrial Emissions Directive) • Support local content in major construction projects Progress on these asks has been made through 3 Ministerial chaired, Working Groups, made up of UK Government, devolved administrations, industry and interested parties.
