Last year, (FY 2017/18), consular staff provided assistance in 22,000 new consular cases, and managed over 7000 ongoing cases.the FCO works in partnership with other organisations to provide specialist assistance to British nationals abroad, which the FCO is not able to provide. Partnerships are with non-profit charities or non-governmental organisations.One of the partnerships is for the welfare of British nationals in detention overseas. Last year (FY 2017/18), consular staff worked on 5,287 cases involving arrests and detentions. There are currently over 2,300 British nationals detained around the world.
