They vary significantly in size, complexity, geographical location and type ranging from furnished historic houses, ruined castles and abbeys to prehistoric and Roman remains, industrial sites, gardens and statues. Almost all are protected as scheduled ancient monuments and /or listed buildings, registered historic gardens, conservation areas. A few are World Heritage Sites.
