The road is set in a steep cutting that is approximately 250m long, and is up to 5m deep. The cutting is partially vegetated with ivy, semi mature and mature trees, with occasional near vertical to overhanging rock faces, soil debris at the toe and small discrete soil slip scarps exposed. The cutting slopes have a history of instability with localised soil and rock falls onto the road presenting a hazard to road users and requiring regular maintenance by Bath & North East Somerset Council (B&NES or ‘the Council’)). Slope debris also appears to have blocked highway drainage at the toe of the slope.
