As a consequence it has a large IT infrastructure to support a student population of around 40,000 alongside a staff of nearly 11,000. This large, diverse community requires a sound infrastructure and equipment to enable it to carry out research, teaching and administration including email, printing, Internet access, and specialist software on a variety of hardware. In addition to a large number of staff desktop machines, both staff and students are able to access almost 3,000 PCs in more than 20 clusters across the campus, some of which operate 24/7. The management and maintenance of all aspects of IT is undertaken by the University’s IT Services Directorate.
