The Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE) specifies that a person who is mentally disordered or otherwise mentally vulnerable or under 17 years of age\* and in police detention requires an appropriate adult. The ?Appropriate Adult ?means in the case of a juvenile; 1.the parent, guardian or, if the juvenile is in local authority care, a person representing that organisation; 2.a social worker of a local authority; or 3.failing either of the above, another responsible adult aged 18 or over who is not a police officer or employed by the police.
