The technology, whole slides scanning, allows glass slides ? fragile and single ? to be converted into high quality digital images that will be stored electronically on a hard disc or server with the ability to replicate/copy/mirror, as required. These images can then be viewed by anyone with access to the world wide web. This represents a sea change in disciplines which involve viewing glass slides under a microscope (teaching in Micro-Anatomy/Histology and Pathology, Research based on animal or human tissues and diagnostic work in cellular pathology, microbiology and histology and cytology). This will allow: - Archival and distribution of key teaching, research and diagnostic material. - Instant access to this archive using the world wide web. - Enable e-learning and assessment in the relevant disciplines. - Application of digital analytical algorithms for research.
