The scheme focuses on the provision of older children’s play opportunities (as this is a conditional use of the Section 106 funding which is integral to the project). The design is characterised by the provision of a new central active area (replacing the existing large and unused tarmac area at the centre of the park), re-surfacing of existing areas to create a new civic space and the provision of pop-up services for planned events/markets in the area adjacent to the Overground station. In terms of play opportunities, the active zone contains informal goals for ball games, a basketball hoop and dedicated space for three table tennis tables. The scheme also contains a significant overhaul to the park’s planting scheme, including the provision of fourteen new trees and extensive shrub replacement. The design has been developed by Jon Sheaff & Associates and is tailored to ensure an ongoing reduction on the levels of parks maintenance required, lowering ongoing burdens on Council revenue streams.
