They are designated under the EU Habitats and Birds Directives as part of the Natura 2000 network of sites. The “Restoring Humberhead Peatlands: LIFE+ Project” (THAT’S LIFE) aims to restore the bogs of Thorne Moors Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and Hatfield Moors SAC to allow the sites to achieve favourable SAC status; to increase the population of breeding Nightjars on the Thorne and Hatfield Moors Special Protection Area (SPA) and; to work with local communities to increase awareness of the importance of these sites.
