# How to find UK government tenders (2026 guide)

Where UK public contracts are actually published, which portals matter, and how to build a search that catches the right tenders without drowning you.

Updated 3 Oct 2026

The UK public sector spends hundreds of billions of pounds a year with outside suppliers. Plenty of it goes to small businesses. The hard part is rarely winning your first contract. It's **finding the right opportunities early enough to bid well**.

This guide explains where UK tenders are published, how the main portals differ, and how to set up a search routine that takes minutes a day instead of hours.

## Where UK tenders are published

There is no single list of every UK public contract, but in 2026 most of them pass through a handful of places.

### Find a Tender (the Central Digital Platform)

Since the Procurement Act 2023 went live in February 2025, **Find a Tender** has been the Central Digital Platform for public procurement in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Buyers publish tender notices, early market engagement notices, pipeline notices and award notices there. If you only check one place, check this one.

### Contracts Finder

**Contracts Finder** has long been the home of lower-value opportunities in England, and procurements that started under the old rules still publish there. Many buyers also keep posting to it. It's free and searchable, and it has a large archive of past awards, which is useful for research. Read more in [Contracts Finder vs Find a Tender](https://tendernation.io/guides/contracts-finder-vs-find-a-tender).

### Devolved portals

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own portals for many devolved buyers:

- **Public Contracts Scotland** for Scottish public bodies
- **Sell2Wales** for Welsh buyers
- **eTendersNI** for Northern Ireland

### Buyer e-tendering systems

Many councils, NHS trusts and universities run their tenders through e-tendering systems such as Proactis, Delta, In-Tend, Atamis or Jaggaer. The notice is usually also published on Find a Tender or Contracts Finder, but the documents, clarification questions and submission all happen in the buyer's own system. Expect to register on several of these over time. To see what councils have open right now, browse [every open council tender](https://tendernation.io/opportunities/councils) in one list, and read [how to bid for council contracts](https://tendernation.io/guides/how-to-bid-for-council-contracts).

### Frameworks and dynamic markets

A large share of public spending runs through **frameworks**: pre-approved supplier lists set up by bodies like Crown Commercial Service, ESPO, YPO and NHS Shared Business Services. Once a framework is in place, buyers can call off work from it without a fresh open tender. If your sector is heavily framework-based, the opportunity to watch for is the **framework tender itself**, which may come round only every few years.

### Europe and international

If you also sell abroad, the EU's **TED** (Tenders Electronic Daily, see [can UK companies bid for EU tenders?](https://tendernation.io/guides/eu-tenders-for-uk-companies)) publishes above-threshold notices from EU member states, and multilateral lenders like the **World Bank** publish procurement for the projects they fund.

## The problem with searching portals by hand

Every portal works differently. Keyword search is literal, so a search for "cleaning" misses "janitorial services" and "facilities management". CPV codes, the EU classification codes many notices are tagged with, help, but buyers apply them inconsistently. Checking four or five sites every morning eats an hour, and the tender you needed is still the one you didn't see.

That's the gap tender alert services fill. Whatever tool you use, the approach below works.

## A search routine that works

### 1. Describe what you sell in buyer language

Write down how a public buyer would describe your service, not how you would. A software agency might sell "web development", but buyers advertise "digital services", "website redesign", "user-centred design" and "case management system". Collect 10 to 20 phrases from real notices in your field.

### 2. Pick your sectors

Find the CPV divisions that match your work. [Browse tenders by sector](https://tendernation.io/sectors) to see which categories your kind of contract usually falls under, for example [IT services](https://tendernation.io/sectors/it-services), [construction work](https://tendernation.io/sectors/construction-work) or [cleaning and environmental services](https://tendernation.io/sectors/sewage-refuse-cleaning-environmental).

### 3. Set limits

Decide what you can realistically deliver: contract value range, geography, and whether you need lots or subcontracting. A one-person consultancy probably shouldn't spend time on a £20 million national framework.

### 4. Turn it into saved searches with alerts

Combine your phrases, sectors and limits into a few saved searches and get them emailed daily or weekly. On TenderNation, saved searches cover Contracts Finder, Find a Tender, TED and the World Bank in one place, and the alerts come with AI summaries so you can decide in seconds whether a tender is worth opening.

### 5. Follow your target buyers

Make a shortlist of 10 to 30 organisations you most want to work with and follow them. Each [buyer profile](https://tendernation.io/buyers) shows their live tenders, who won their past contracts and roughly what those were worth.

### 6. Watch for early signals

Pipeline and preliminary market engagement notices give you months of notice. Taking part in market engagement often shapes the final specification and builds a relationship with the buyer before the formal tender process, when contact is restricted.

## How to judge a tender quickly

Once alerts are flowing, the skill is deciding fast. For each tender, ask:

- **Can we deliver all of it, or a lot of it?** If not, is there a partner?
- **Do we meet the minimum requirements?** Look for turnover thresholds, insurance levels, accreditations (such as ISO 9001 or Cyber Essentials) and case study requirements.
- **Is the timeline realistic?** Deadline, clarification window, contract start.
- **Is it already someone else's?** Check past awards. If an incumbent has held it for ten years, you need a strong reason to believe you can win.
- **Is it worth it?** Compare the value and margin against the hours a good bid will take.

TenderNation's fit score and bid/no-bid advisor walk through these questions for each tender against your company profile, but a simple scoring sheet works too. The point is to decide deliberately, not on gut feel at 11pm.
